West Orange is a large community, well developed with numerous activities available for its residents.One fifth of its land is reserved by park land, among two large outdoor havens are the South Mountain Reservation and Eagle Rock Reservation. Here West Orange residents can enjoy, picnics, hiking, riding trails and much more. One can also find a huge amount of cultural programs and sports available for residents of all ages. The Mayor has a special program which puts an emphasis on developing learning opportunities and activities for children and adults with special needs. The community works together to sponsor many day care services and activities to enrich the lives of children with special needs . The Jewish Community Center- Metro West located at Northfield Ave in West Orange , sponsors a number of these activities .

Ginny Duenkel Pool is open to WO residents of all ages and numerous membership plans are available. The facility includes three pools: a large main pool equipped with a safety entrance ramp, a diving tank with a low board and a water slide and a baby pool complete with spray toys. Special programs at the pool include the swim lesson program, seven day a week recreation programs, the very successful Wave Swim Team, the Youth Sports Pool Party, senior citizen programs, pool parties, and the Annual Sports & Games Night . Located at 60.5 Cherry St , West Orange. The town also has a Summer Park Program . The SPP accepts children who have completed Kindergarten thru 7th grade.The program runs daily from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM for four and one half weeks beginning in late June. For children in kindergarden there is a seperate summer park program at The West Orange Community House. Before and after school care is also provided. The campers are divided into five sites based on their school grade. All campers use the municipal pool twice a week. Daily activities include games, sports, arts and crafts, reading, movies, etc. Affordably priced. Limited enrollment. Registration dates in mid-June. Summer Enrichment Program located at West Orange Highschool is available to West Orange children entering grades 2-8. Classes include a wide variety of subject areas including music, fine arts, academic classes and physical fitness. Program runs for the first month of summer vacation during the AM hours on weekdays only. Various tuition packages are available. For those families with special need children The Mayor’s program for individuals with special needs is open to our special population and their families. The year long program provides valuable information, support services, a summer camp, monthly theme parties, summer pool parties and trips. Footsteps is a division of the West Orange Recreation Department that provides year round recreational programs for children with special needs. It also includes a peer mentoring component commonly referred to as “Big Buddies.” Six week semesters are held in the Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer. Typical courses may include but not be limited to bowling, swimming, gardening, cooking, dancing and fitness. Unico’s Garden For the Exceptional Child is located in Degnan Park adjacent to the Katz Civic Center. In 2008, the National Chapter of UNICO awarded our local branch top honors for this stunning and worthwhile project. The garden has over a dozen individual plots as well as a hot house. It is utilized extensively by the Footsteps Program. The Katz Civic Center offers a variety of recreational programs. The facility also has two rooms available to the public. The cozy skate room accommodates up to thirty five guests. It has been used successfully for meetings, seminars and small parties. The Lake Room, with a patio overlooking the pond, accommodates one hundred and ten people. It is ideal for larger get togethers. Either room can be rented by community civic groups or residents. Commuting from West Orange to New York City

Mountain Arena Park and Ride

Located 19 miles west of Manhattan West Orange is often overlooked by Manhattan Commuters because it is not on the New York City train line. The town offers an extensive park and ride facility located at the Mountain Arenaon Northfield Ave. Parking is available per month and Community Coach provide express rides into Manhattan. The commute time is 45 minutes via express bus from Northfield ave. Commuting by train is also very accessible because the town offers four free shuttle bus routes into the Orange and South Orange Railroad Stations. From South Orange or Orange train station there is a quick Mid-Town Direct 30 minute train ride to NY Penn Station. Community Coach and DeCamp Bus lines provide routes throughout the town along Northfield Ave, Mt. Pleasant Ave, and Eagle Rock Ave. A bus stop is within walking distance from all areas of West Orange because a large portion of the residents are Manhattan Commuters. The bus trip to the NY Port Authority is approximately 45 minutes. Another convenient travel method is a short drive (say 15-20 minutes) to Harrison, NJ, and the Path Station, especially if your trip is Downtown. Driving time, in or out to Manhattan, in non-rush hours, is 30 minutes via Rt I-280 & the Lincoln or Holland Tunnels, so getting home from an evening Broadway show, or a sporting event at Madison Square Garden is a cinch.
