South Orange Education and Day Care

South Orange shares a school system with Maplewood. There are 6,100 students in one high school, two middle schools and six elementary schools.

The student body numbers 1,865 at Columbia High School, an 80-year-old Collegiate Gothic building that sits a block from the South Orange border. Of the 462 graduates 77 percent went to four-year colleges, and 14 percent went to two-year colleges, according to school authorities. Columbia High School offers advanced placement, college prep and vocational courses, as well as courses in film-making and journalism. Columbia High School offers twenty five clubs, from astronomy to chess. SAT averages of the 2007 graduates were 553 in reading, 563 in math and 558 in writing. The school had two National Merit Scholars and offered 21 advanced-placement courses last year.

South Orange proper has three primary schools. Some students attend South Mountain Annex in kindergarten and first grade, then South Mountain Elementary from second to fifth grade. The Board of Education mandates that classes in the district number no more than 22 in kindergarten and 26 in fourth and fifth grades.

The Baird Preschool is a program for South Orange and Maplewood children 2 ½ through 5 years of age. The Baird Preschool is licensed by the State of New Jersey. The entire staff works together to provide children with a well-rounded educational and recreational preschool experience.The Baird Preschool is held on the second floor of The Baird, 5 Mead Street, in an area dedicated and outfitted for the needs of preschoolers. This program is open to all South Orange and Maplewood residents who are between the ages of 2 ½ and 5 years of age and are toilet trained.

For the session which begins in the fall of each year, children must be: 2 on or before April 1st for the 2½ years old program 3 on or before October 1st for the 3 years old program 4 on or before October 1st for the 4/5 years old program.

Before and After School Programs

South Orange offers a before and after school care program which ends at 7:00 pm during week days. The town is commited to providing students with a structured enviroment supervised by caring adults. Students are grouped by grade level and participate in a variety of daily activities such as; homework time, arts & crafts, games and recreation.

Start times vary depending on School start time. The programs are held in each school’s cafeteria. They are run by thoroughly trained and caring staff. Students are engaged in structured activities as well as free play until it is time to be accompanied to class. There is no Before Care at Jefferson Elementary. Before care for the Annex is held at South Mountain School. Parents need to confirm bussing to the Annex within the School District.
