The Historic Montrose Neighborhood of South Orange is an area known for large magnificent historic homes built in the early 1900’s. It was the vision of one man, John Gorham Vose, a prominent New York attorney who first purchased a plot of farm land in South Orange in 1858. Taken with the beautiful Mountain Scenery and the easy New York City commute, he quickly bought up 175 acres of land between Scotland Rd and Center Street and began building huge mansions throughout South Orange. Vose named the area Montrose. Other successful businessmen like, Turrell, Kingman, Connett, Mead, Speir, and Mayhew, also bought farms, carved out streets (currently named after these prominent businessmen), and helped change the face of the community. The area is centrally located close to downtown South Orange Avenue and also close to the two train stations within town. The Montrose section offers a jitney service which commutes local residents to the Morris and Essex Trains. It is a prestigious neighborhood, well known within New Jersey for historic tudors, large victorians with wrap around porches and huge brick mansions many of which are one the National Registry for historic homes.
